Most people celebrate New Year's Day socialising with family and friends, so what does 'Her Indoors' decide to do - wash the dog instead. I'm not sure that 'out with the old and in with the new', usually refers to bath water, but then 'Her Indoors' is a little idiosyncratic. I should have noticed the warning signs: the wrinkling of the nose when in close proximity and the scattering of words like 'smelly' and 'pongy' amongst the usual terms of endearment. Anyway, before I could plan evasive action, I was whisked up the stairs and dunked in the baby bath with a liberal application of shampoo. My bedding, collar, harness and coat went into the washing machine. I really think it's only a matter of time before she puts me in on a hot wash with a biological liqui-tab and disinfectant instead of fabric softener. I have to admit that although I don't like the bathing bit, the rubbing down with the towel and the clucking and fussing in case I get cold is all rather nice. I also get to see the upstairs of the house which is a bit of a novelty. True, I'm fluffy in places no self-respecting terrier should be fluffy in, and I smell like a big girl's blouse, but I get lots of fuss and positive comment about my improved appearance, so it's not all bad.
